Windows 10 and Jaws

My older sister may soon be giving me her new "old" laptop that she's had for only a couple months. What's the earliest version of Jaws I can get away with running on it? I think I have version 13 or 14. I know, I know, it needs updating, but I'm on a really old laptop at work, so don't see the point right now. Also, how is accessibility on IE, and Google, I'll probably be using the laptop a lot for work.

To use Windows 10 you'll need Jaws 16 latest version, or 17.
NVDA latest versions work as well.

I don't know about Windows 10 but Windows 8.1 with latest IE is accessible and I have JAWS 17. There's some good new features including OCR of image PDFs so if you can it's worth investing in an upgrade of JAWS with SMA. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I may be upgrading later than I thought for JFW. I have a wedding to plan for. Too bad you can't pay in installments!

Hey, congratulations!

Yes, being forced by those money-hungry, greedy bastards over at FS to pay for each upgrade until you have the latest version of JAWS is a fat load of bullshit. Not all of us have, say, $800 or more for upgrading from 13 to the current version. *sigh*

I have aquestion fore those who have windows 10 and running jaws. How are you getting humanware brilliant to work with Jaws? It works well with nvda but jaws so far its a fell.

No one is really forcing you to upgrade. There are other screenreaders that might do the things you want without you paying that much money out of your pockets. Personally, I try to upgrade every single time my SMA comes up for renewal, because I prefer the functionality of JAWS over all other screenreaders, especially on a more professional level. You might do just fine with those other ones, though.

I also upgrade on time.
Not only does it help with new programs, but web sites development.
It is also cheaper to upgrade instead of waiting for several versions to pass you buy.
At 800 I'd start with a new license.

A while back people were posting about Jaws and Windows 10 not working well together. I'm assuming that all this has been straightened out??? Even though I've got my Mac, I still use my Windows laptop on a regular basis as well. Old habbits dy hard. Anyway, I'll have to purchase another SMA if I want to upgrade my Jaws but I don't want to do so if there are lots of accessibility issues.

In my personal experience yes and no. I'll explain that.
My desktop is setup properly, so has no accessibility issues as far as I can notice.
A few things are not working, like the Microsoft web browser, but Microsoft has said it doesn't yet, and suggest you use another.
I use Firefox, Chrome, and IE without any issues just like I did with Windows 8.1.
Some apps are not accessible, but that was true with 8.1.
My laptop was working, but has developed some sort of issue and doesn't see.
I can still use it fine, but many things aren't working as they should.
I think this happened when Windows updated, so this week, I'll reinstall Windows and see how it goes.
Windows 10 isn't 100% perfect, but neighter are any of the others.
Setup properly, it work, and works well.

Thanks for the congratulations. Ideally, I'd like to upgrade regularly, but it's kind of one of those things I don't get around to doing unless I really need to. I'll probably get a new license for JFW.

You really need to.
My reason, things change even if you aren't using them.
Even web browsers will change, and many time a web site will update settings.
You might feel it is working just fine, but when you install the latest version or a screen reader, NVDA, Jaws, or whatever, you'll notice what you were missing.
Last when you need it, it is simply cheaper.
I am posting from that laptop I needed fixing. Wonderful after a clean install.

If you get a touch screen labtop jaws works well withthe touch screen.

Post 16 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 26-Dec-2015 8:18:57

Yes, support is good.
You know, it is my opinion it is a waste for us.
The touchscreen was designed to make it faster to open and close things, or move them around.
We have to navigate it with our finger, so it is even slower then just typing a keyboard stroke.
Sure, on a tablet that doesn't have a keyboard, we are good like using the iPad, but on a computer, or laptop?
If I didn't want the novelty, or it wasn't a feature that came with, I'd save the extra money and get a laptop without touchscreen.

I like having the novalty of both a touch screen and a keyboard integrated into one Some may not like set configuration but fore me it works.
